Review: Blair Singer’ Sales Dogs

This book was the first sales book I read. And after I did I decided to dedicate all my life to Sales. The image on the right refers to the old cover of the book and the reason I put it is more of a sentimental issue.

When I was a little boy I started my first business, I sold some color clips which I turned into earrings at my school, I was probably 9 years old. After that, I tried with some different kind of business, I even sold excerpts from any subject at high school, and they sold well!

Then, I decided to go on a technical career at College and graduated as an Electronic Engineer (kind of weird for someone who loved business, but I thought I could do something with this). After that, and working for an important Telecommunication company, I graduated from an MBA.

Then, I decided to go into business again and sales, and I was pretty nervous because I had invested the last 9 years of my life developing technical skills, not sales skills.

Where should I begin?

I decided to read a Sales book… where should I begin? Of course, searching with Google this book came up. So I bought it from Amazon: Sales Dogs: You Don’t Have to be an Attack Dog to Explode Your Income (Rich Dad’s Advisors) and started to read. Recently I bought a copy of the new version of this book.

It’s incredibly how good Blair Singer is at getting your attention. The whole book is a comparison between dogs breeds and the personality of a Salesperson. Lots of people (including myself actually) think they have to be like an attack dog to win the sales game, but it’s not.

It’s a very interesting concept how he develops every basic detail on people’s personality and how it’s supposed to be in the real life.

It’s been clear after reading the book, that anyone can make a lot of money by playing to its strength and mixing the 5 dogs breed personalities a salesperson needs to have.

Actually, the better the salesperson wants to be, the more of a mixture of breeds he must be.

What is this book like?

The book is fun and develops not just how a salesperson has to be to be successful, but also how a person must develop some personal issues to overcome the idea of selling and to forget the uncomfortable selling some newbies (or even oldies) can have about their profession.

    I don’t really appreciate sales people who think they have to behave like attack dogs to sell their product. I prefer to keep it simple and I value honesty, as opposed to someone trying to stuff something down my throat, that I am not even interested in.

    I think the recommendation of mixing the personalities is a great one, since as a sales person, you want to be flexible and sensitive to the needs of a prospective client.

When you started on the issue of sales, was there any breed in which you felt more comfortable? How was the transition to the other breeds?

    1. Hi Jayme. Thanks for your comment! At first it’s difficult to identify your breed, I think I was a Retriever. The transition to other races requires more practice. You have to practice over and over, until you learn how to use them depending on the situation you are in. In fact, sometime it’s still difficult to use one such as the pitbull because it’s difficult to ask for what you want, if this is your case, you have to learn how to ask, in this case, you can even visit another post we wrote about this topic: Ask a Question, Get an Answer.
