23 “In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you.

24 “Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.

If Jesus is encouraging us to ask, why aren’t you asking for everything you want?

Let’s start with the basics:

Why people are afraid to ask?

The fear to ask starts if you think you’ll look foolish, needy, etc. But the real problem is people are rejecting themselves in advance. That’s the real issue and that’s why we encourage you to ask. If you’re in sales, you need to ask for the order, if you want to date the girl/boy of your dreams, ask for a date, if you want a raise in your job, ask for it. You may get a yes in any given situation.

How to ask for what you want?

We can say there is a method for everything. Asking is not an exception. You may want to follow some steps if you want to ask that may give you confidence. There are many books that can teach you how to ask, we like a particular one by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen named: The Aladdin Factor.

According to them, you can follow five tips to get you started:

  1. Ask with positive expectation. Ask if you expect to get a yes.
  2. Start with the assumption you can get it.
  3. Ask someone who can give it to you.
  4. Be clear and specific.
  5. Ask repeatedly, persist, never give up.

In one of the books by Jack Canfield, you can find a really interesting statistic:

  • 44% of all salespeople quit trying after the first call.
  • 24% quit after the second call.
  • 14% quit after the third call.
  • 12% quit trying to set their prospect after the fourth call.

If you add those numbers, 94% of the people quit before the fifth attempt to close a sale. Now, you wonder why the top 6% is earning twice, three times or four times more than you do.

Ask, and it shall be given to you.

Remember, asking is a habit you need to develop. How do you develop a habit? You just keep trying. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

A little exercise

Why don’t you go outside and look for something you want? Anything. Pay attention to whatever you’re feeling and stop asking. Acknowledge your feelings and get over them!
